Silvio Garattini was born in Bergamo (Italy) on 12 November 1928. He earned a diploma in Chemistry, then a degree in Medicine and was appointed lecturer in Chemotherapy and Pharmacology.
Founder in 1961 and director since then of the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri that now has three locations (Milan, Bergamo and Ranica) and about 750 people work there.
He was a founder of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). He has been recipient of many awards and honours for his research activity.
He has been member of different national and international Committees. Now he is member of Consiglio Superiore di Sanità and Comitato Nazionale per la Bioetica.
